Certification

Certification Process

The certification process with the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists (IAPST) is designed to ensure that every Certified Member is thoroughly prepared to practice psychosexual therapy at the highest professional standard. Certification may be achieved through one of three routes: completing an IAPST-accredited program, pursuing a structured self-study pathway with supervision, or enrolling in the Certification Alignment Program for those who have already been certified by another recognized body.
Regardless of the route taken, all applicants for Certified Membership must hold at least a bachelor’s degree and have completed advanced, accredited clinical training in psychotherapy, counseling, psychology, or a closely related mental health discipline. This training must meet the recognized standard in the applicant’s jurisdiction for independent practice as a psychotherapist, which may take the form of a postgraduate diploma, certificate, master’s degree, or higher. Applicants must also affirm that they have the legal capacity to engage in clinical practice within their jurisdiction, in accordance with the laws and professional guidelines governing psychosexual therapy in their region.
Through this rigorous process, IAPST certification signifies both professional readiness and a commitment to ethical, evidence-based practice in the field of psychosexual therapy.
Accredited Program Pathway
For individuals who graduate from an IAPST-accredited program, the certification process is simple and direct. These programs already include the required clinical supervision and the development of a professional portfolio, ensuring that graduates are fully prepared for certification. When applying, graduates need only submit their completed application along with proof of program completion and a letter of recommendation from their school. Once these materials are reviewed and approved, certification will be granted.
Self-Study Pathway
For those who pursue the Self-Study Pathway, the certification process is more extensive but designed to ensure both academic and clinical readiness. Candidates must first contact the Membership & Certification Committee to receive the approved reading list, which forms the foundation of their preparation. In addition to this academic study, candidates are required to complete 50 hours of clinical supervision with an IAPST-approved supervisor, providing essential opportunities to integrate theory with practice. Once these requirements are met, candidates will schedule a Certification Board Interview. This interview—similar in style to a doctoral defense or licensing board review—offers the Certification Committee a chance to assess the candidate’s knowledge, clinical application, and overall readiness for certification.
Certification Alignment Pathway
For individuals who have already been certified by another recognized professional body, the Certification Alignment Pathway (CAP) offers a direct route to IAPST certification. This pathway ensures that practitioners are aligned with IAPST’s standards, ethics, and professional conduct through a focused program of study. Upon completion of the CAP, applicants need only submit their certification application along with proof of prior certification and proof of completing the CAP program. Once these materials are reviewed and approved, they will be granted IAPST certification.
